Weekly Rides

The club has official rides almost every Saturday and Sunday throughout the year. We do close over the December Christmas period, where no official club rides are supported, but members are encouraged to continue riding over the period as the new season starts early in January every year.

Rides start and finish at Virgin Active – Karaglen, there is plenty of parking available for your car at the gym.

We leave at 6:00am sharp in the Summer months, and at 6:30 sharp in the Winter months. The starting times will be well communicated ahead of the change in time.

There are mid week rides generally leaving from Virgin Active Karaglen at 04:30.

To learn more about our weekly rides, contact one of the committee members.

Mountain Bike Rides

There are a number of routes that are followed by the Mountain Bike riders, comprising of different terrains and distances. Mountain Bike rides are posted on What’s App group, where rides, events for races and club outrides are posted.

There is also a mid-week ride at Modderfontein, for those who are able – this is a very enjoyable ride with some social time after the ride. We meet and leave from Flamingo Centre at 8am sharp, to ride to the reserve and back for about 2,5 hours.

As a Mountain Biking community, we have a lot to offer the ones not minding the dust and mud.

Club Outrides

Club Outrides

During the course of the year, we schedule longer outrides in order to give the members an opportunity to enjoy longer rides, and test their endurance. These rides are generally around 160 to 180 kilometres in distance and are usually one-way rides. The intention of the outrides is to create an opportunity for the members to enjoy a different pace and a different distance.

The rides often end with a picnic, or breakfast/brunch, which allows members to get to know each other a bit better. Transport is generally arranged for the members and their bikes to be able to get back home after the ride. These rides generally do incur additional cost but this is kept to a minimum through the ongoing support we receive from our club sponsors.

Supported Events

We organise these events during the year:

  • February – AGM – for paid up members only
  • April – Mountain bike outride
  • June – Polar Bear ride to Heidelberg
  • September – Barnyard Fundraiser
  • October – first Sunday – Pink Drive in support of Cancer Awareness
  • November – 94.7 / Ride Joburg
  • December – Year end function

There are costs involved with all of the rides, which are open to members and non-members.

After Action

After Action

The weekend rides usually end with coffee after the ride at Coffee Canony in the Karaglen Mall – please bring some money for your coffee. The post ride coffee is not compulsory, but is a great opportunity to meet new people and find out more about the club. This happens for both Road and Mountain Bike rides.

At the more popular events, the club will have a gazebo with drinks and snacks for members to get together after such events, and share experiences

Breakdown of the Weekly Riding Groups

Groups are broken up according to riders’ strength and number of riders. We try to keep the groups to a maximum of 30 riders, in order to maintain discipline and safety on the road.

Group A

These are the racing snakes, and generally do the longer distances, with an average speed of around 32kph.

Group B

They are the fast riders, who have an average speed of around 29kph.

Group C

The average speed for this groups is around 26 kph.

Group D

This is intended for newbies, and people recovering from injury/illness – this group adapts to the riders on the day, and has an average speed of up to 22 kph – capability dependant.

Meet the Committee

The committee are all cyclists who serve our cycling community as volunteers. We believe that for a club like ours to function, we all need to make an active and constructive contribution to the success of our club on behalf of the members and sponsors.
